CarPlay Support for AI Chatbots
With iOS 26.4, CarPlay users will be able to use third‑party chatbots directly through the CarPlay interface. AI services such as Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT become accessible via CarPlay for the first time.
Apple’s CarPlay Developer Guide [PDF] lists voice‑based conversational apps as a supported app type starting with iOS 26.4. A new voice‑control screen will let these apps provide visual feedback while users interact with them by voice.
To integrate with CarPlay, AI apps must add support for the voice‑control screen and obtain the specific entitlement for voice‑based conversational apps. Companies that build chatbots will need to update their apps accordingly.
CarPlay has long supported third‑party apps, but Apple restricts the types of apps to minimize driver distraction. Previously, companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google could not create CarPlay apps, limiting users to Siri for voice controls while driving.
The new integration allows CarPlay users to launch voice‑based apps such as ChatGPT and ask questions hands‑free. These apps cannot control vehicle functions or iPhone features, and there is no wake‑word activation; users must open the app first. Once launched, the customizable voice‑control screen delivers a vehicle‑optimized chatbot experience.
iOS 26.4 is currently in beta and is expected to be released this spring.
