Instagram expands its TV app to Google TV

Instagram is extending its Instagram for TV app to Google TV devices in the United States, just two months after the app debuted on Amazon Fire TV in December 2025. The app was originally launched to bring Reels viewing beyond mobile devices, and it now also lets users browse posts from their Instagram feeds directly on their televisions.

Why Instagram is moving to the TV screen

  • Competing with YouTube – YouTube continues to dominate the TV streaming space. By offering Reels on TV, Instagram aims to capture viewers who are already watching content from the couch.
  • Rivalry with TikTok – TikTok already has a TV app, so Instagram’s move helps it stay competitive in the short‑form video market.

Features of the Instagram for TV app

  • Personalized Reels feed – The app curates Reels based on the content and creators each user follows on Instagram.
  • Channel and category organization – Reels are grouped into channels and topics such as comedy, music, and lifestyle.
  • Auto‑play – Videos play automatically, eliminating the need to scroll manually between clips.
  • Interactive controls – Users can like, view comments, and re‑share Reels directly from the TV interface.
  • Multi‑account support – Up to five Instagram accounts can be linked to a single TV home screen, or users can create a dedicated account for TV viewing.

Getting started

  1. Pair the app with your existing Instagram mobile app.
  2. Add accounts (up to five) or create a new one specifically for TV.
  3. Navigate through Reels channels using your TV remote or compatible controller.
