Instagram’s new ‘Instants’ feature combines elements from Snapchat and BeReal

Instagram announced on Wednesday that it’s globally launching Instants, a new feature for sharing authentic, disappearing photos after testing it with select users. The feature lets users share disappearing photos with their Close Friends or mutual followers that can be viewed only once and remain available for 24 hours.
What is Instants?
Instants borrows ideas from platforms like Snapchat, Locket, and BeReal, focusing on authentic and ephemeral content. Unlike the curated, polished posts that dominate Instagram, Instants is designed for quick, real‑life snapshots.
- Capture a photo with Instagram’s in‑app camera (no uploads from your camera roll).
- No editing tools are available; you can only add text.
- Recipients can react with emojis, reply, or send an Instant back.
- Screenshots or screen recordings are blocked.
Meta notes that the idea behind this format is to share authentic moments as they’re happening.
How to Use Instants
- Capture an Instant – Tap the mini photo stack in the bottom‑right corner of your Instagram inbox.
- Share – Choose Close Friends or mutual followers; the photo can be viewed once and stays available for 24 hours.
- React – Recipients can respond with emojis, reply, or send an Instant back.
- Undo – If you’ve accidentally shared an Instant, tap the “undo” button to delete it from your archive before it’s opened.
- Manage Reception – Hold down the pile of Instants in your inbox and swipe right to temporarily stop receiving them, or block/mute specific people.
Archive and Recap
- Instants are stored in a private archive that you can view for up to one year.
- You can compile archived Instants into a recap and post it to Instagram Stories.
Testing as a Standalone App
Meta is also testing the Instants format as a standalone app in select regions, including Spain and Italy. Read more about the test.
Context and Competition
Instagram has gradually become overrun with influencer content and ads. Instants appears to be a move back toward casual, private interactions centered on photo sharing among close circles of friends.
However, the feature may be a bit late to capitalize on the low‑pressure, authentic photo‑sharing trend. BeReal’s popularity has waned, and many users already rely on Instagram Stories for fast, informal updates, potentially reducing the need for a separate app or feature.
