I tried a physical AI assistant at MWC 2026, and I’m not sure we need one

Lenovo turned up to MWC 2026 with its usual suitcase full of wild ideas. While the ThinkBook Modular AI PC stole most of the spotlight, another oddball caught my eye: an AI‑powered robotic arm with “Love me” eyes—no mouth, no smile, just a cute stare that follows you around the desk.
What Is the AI Workmate?
The AI Workmate is a physical AI assistant that brings the capabilities usually confined to a phone or laptop onto a desk‑top robot. Its purpose is to give AI a body and let it help with everyday office tasks, blending the physical and digital worlds. The robot can:
- Scan and summarize documents placed in front of it
- Organize notes and whip up presentations via voice prompts
- Project content directly onto a wall or nearby surface

Interaction and Gestures
Talking to the Workmate feels familiar, reminiscent of pre‑Google Gemini voice commands. A built‑in camera recognizes when a person is standing in front of it and can distinguish the primary user from others nearby.
One of the slickest interactions is the ability to hand off content from your laptop using gestures. Drag a file in mid‑air toward the robot, and it picks it up, projects it, and continues as if that were a normal office workflow.
Demo Highlights
Intelligent Projection
During the demo, the robot scanned the room, identified a blank wall, and automatically chose it as the projection surface for a presentation.

Document Signing
Another clever trick was document signing. You sign a piece of paper in front of the robot, and it captures the signature and transfers it onto a digital document on your laptop. The same process works for hand‑drawn sketches.
Critical Takeaway
While the AI Workmate is impressive to watch, it essentially solves problems we already handle more efficiently with existing tools—smartphone scanning apps, cloud‑based document editors, and wireless casting. The robot adds a theatrical layer without delivering a clear productivity advantage.
That’s part of the spirit of MWC: a testing ground for ideas that are equal parts clever, weird, and impractical. Even if the AI Workmate never leaves concept‑land, it was still a cool glimpse into what physical AI could look like.
