I saw a physical AI assistant at MWC 2026, and I’m not sure we need one

Lenovo turned up to MWC 2026 with its usual suitcase full of wild ideas. While the ThinkBook Modular AI PC stole most of the spotlight, another oddball on the stand caught my eye: an AI‑powered robotic arm with “Love me” eyes—no mouth, no smile, just a cute stare that follows you around the desk.
Overview
This is Lenovo’s AI Workmate concept, essentially a physical AI assistant that normally lives inside your phone or laptop but now has its own space on a desk. The idea is to give AI a body and let it help with everyday office tasks, blending your physical and digital lives.
Features
- Document handling – Scan and summarize documents placed in front of it, organize notes, and even whip up presentations with voice prompts.
- Projection – Project content directly onto a wall or nearby surface after identifying a suitable blank area.
- User recognition – Built‑in camera detects when a person is standing in front of it and can distinguish the primary user from others.
- Gesture hand‑off – Drag a file in mid‑air toward the robot; it picks it up, projects it, and continues processing.
- Document signing – Sign a piece of paper in front of the robot, and it captures the signature and transfers it onto a digital document on your laptop. The same works for hand‑drawn sketches.

Impressions
Talking to the AI Workmate feels familiar—much like the pre‑Google Gemini days when straightforward voice commands got work done. However, the constant “watching” can feel a bit uncomfortable due to the always‑on camera. The demo’s slick moments, such as the robot intelligently scanning the room to find a wall for projection, showcase the concept’s theatrical flair.
Conclusion
As entertaining as the AI Workmate is, it essentially solves problems we already handle faster with the tools we carry daily, without needing a robot arm silently staring at us from across the desk. That’s the point of MWC, though: a testing ground for ideas that are equal parts clever, weird, and impractical. Even if the AI Workmate never leaves concept‑land, it was still pretty cool to see.
