GPT-5.4 mini brings some of the smarts of OpenAI's latest model to ChatGPT Free and Go users
Source: Engadget
Overview
OpenAI released GPT‑5.4 in early March, positioning it for professional tasks such as programming and data analysis. The company has now introduced two smaller variants: GPT‑5.4 mini and GPT‑5.4 nano. While both are aimed at different use cases, GPT‑5.4 mini is the first of the new models that is available to Free and Go ChatGPT users, offering performance that approaches the full GPT‑5.4 in several areas.
Access for Free and Go Users
- How to use: Free or Go users can select “Thinking” from the ChatGPT plus menu to access GPT‑5.4 mini.
- Paid users: For those on a paid plan, GPT‑5.4 mini serves as the fallback model when the rate limit for the full GPT‑5.4 is reached.
OpenAI states that GPT‑5.4 mini outperforms GPT‑5.0 mini in key domains:
- Reasoning
- Multimodal understanding (e.g., parsing images and audio)
- Tool use (e.g., more nuanced web‑search capabilities)
It achieves these improvements while running more than twice as fast as its predecessor.
GPT‑5.4 Nano
GPT‑5.4 nano is designed for high‑speed, cost‑efficient tasks such as data classification and extraction. It is not available in the ChatGPT UI; access is limited to the API. OpenAI envisions developers using GPT‑5.4 nano to power AI agents that handle delegated tasks.
Pricing
- Cost: Starting at $0.20 per million input tokens.
