Google will soon address NotebookLM’s clutter problem

TL;DR
- Google is working on an option to organize NotebookLM notebooks into folders.
- The update was shared in response to a user request on X.
- No timeline has been provided for the release.
NotebookLM: A Core AI Tool
NotebookLM has become my most frequently used AI tool—often more so than Gemini on my phone. Over the past several months I’ve used it to:
- Make sense of clusters of documents and topical research papers.
- Condense information from reports.
- Extract value from long YouTube videos – see the related guide here.
Beyond its summarization and chat‑based response capabilities, the audio and visual learning tools have helped me gather countless nuggets of wisdom.
Recent Improvements
Google recently addressed a long‑standing issue with NotebookLM’s presentation feature, allowing users to fix individual slide errors. The update also adds support for exporting AI‑generated presentations to .pptx format. Direct export to Google Slides is slated to arrive soon, and Google has promised another feature that will help organize NotebookLM chats.
Upcoming Folder Organization
In response to a user request on X, the official NotebookLM account announced that users will soon be able to organize their notebooks into folders. This will provide a much better way to sort notebooks by frequency or subject, rather than relying on a single list sorted only by name or date.

The response did not include a timeline for the feature rollout. It is expected that the folder organization will debut on the web interface before arriving in the mobile apps.
Personal Intelligence Testing
Google has also been spotted testing Personal Intelligence in NotebookLM. This feature would allow different notebooks to exchange information and gain insights about you and your work, enabling more finely tuned responses. Read more about it here.
