Google Maps may now force you to sign in before showing photos and reviews
Source: Android Authority

TL;DR
- Google Maps users can only view a single image of a location when signed out.
- Signing in to a Google account is required to view multiple images.
- Reviews also appear to be unavailable unless you sign in.
Overview
Google Maps traditionally works without requiring a Google account—you can search for locations, get directions, and view basic information. However, certain features (e.g., recent trips, saved places) have always required you to be logged in. Recent reports suggest that two additional features—photo galleries and reviews—may now also require a sign‑in.
Photo galleries require a sign‑in
When you click on a destination in Google Maps, a sidebar normally displays a scrollable collection of user‑submitted photos. While the number of images varies by location, popular spots usually have many pictures to browse.
According to several users on Reddit, the experience has changed:
- Signed‑out: Only a single photo is shown for a public place.
- Signed‑in: The full sidebar of images becomes available.
The issue appears consistent across locations, including heavily trafficked destinations such as the Statue of Liberty. In screenshots taken by the author, the signed‑out view shows just one image, whereas the signed‑in view provides a full scrollable gallery.
Reviews are hidden when signed out
Reviews are typically displayed in the same sidebar, near the bottom of the page. Users who are not logged in report that this section is missing entirely, making it impossible to read or write reviews without a Google account.
