Google Maps is more than just a navigation app; it contains a treasure trove of data about locations worldwide. Recently, the service appeared to change how it functions for users who are signed out, hiding reviews and images.

Update (2/23)

In the days following the initial report, Google Maps reverted the change and restored full visibility of reviews, photos, and other content for both signed‑in and signed‑out users.

“Limited view” for signed‑out users

A handful of Reddit users reported that a “limited view” mode activates when you’re not signed into a Google account. Google’s pop‑up explains that this view may appear when:

  • Google Maps is “experiencing issues,”
  • “Unusual traffic” is detected on your network, or
  • Browser extensions interfere.

Signing in to Google Maps may help avoid this limited experience.

Differences between signed‑in and signed‑out versions

State park example (NC)

  • Signed‑in: Shows nearby hotels, rentals, user photos, and additional facts about the area.
  • Signed‑out: Omits most of this information and removes many nearby businesses and attractions from the map.

Restaurant example

The signed‑out listing still displays basic details (address, hours, phone number) but lacks a large amount of information present in the signed‑in view, including:

  • Dine‑in / Takeout / Delivery status
  • User reviews
  • Popular times
  • User photos & videos
  • Menus
  • Related locations

The absence of reviews is especially impactful, as Google Maps has built a massive repository of user‑generated feedback that is valuable for consumers.

Google’s response

Google has not publicly commented on the change. The article will be updated if new information becomes available.
