TL;DR

  • Google has been updating the look of the floating action button (FAB) for Material 3 Expressive across its Android apps.
  • Last year new FAB designs appeared in Google Drive and Google Docs.
  • Now the same change appears to be coming to Google Keep.

Background

Android apps use a UI element called the floating action button (FAB) — the round button you tap to compose a new email in Gmail, add an event in Calendar, and so on. As part of the rollout of Material 3 Expressive, Google began refreshing FABs in several apps, notably Google Drive and Google Docs.

What’s changing in Google Keep

In version 5.26.071.01 of Google Keep for Android, the FAB still appears as a small squircle with a plus sign. The upcoming update will:

  • Make the FAB larger and more prominent.
  • Change its shape from a squircle to a larger, more expressive form.
  • Alter the interaction feedback: after tapping, the FAB will display an “×” symbol inside a circle rather than the original squircle.

A side‑by‑side video comparison (not shown here) demonstrates the visual difference between the current and the anticipated FAB designs.

What to expect

The change isn’t live in Google Keep yet, but the code is already in the app. Google could push the update at any time, so keep an eye on future releases for the new FAB appearance.
