Background

Google Photos introduced the AI‑powered “Ask Photos” feature in the U.S. in 2024, allowing users to search their images with natural‑language queries, including complex requests. The rollout was briefly paused last summer while Google addressed latency issues after receiving user feedback.

User complaints

Some users reported that Ask Photos failed to locate certain photos and that search results were less accurate than the previous “classic” search experience. Although Google previously offered an option to disable Gemini in Google Photos, the setting was buried in the app and often overlooked.

New toggle feature

Google announced a more visible toggle on the search screen that lets users switch off the Ask Photos AI search and revert to the classic results. The company says it will still prioritize whichever results best match the user’s query.

Company statement

In a post shared by Google Photos lead Shimrit Ben‑Yair, the company explained that the change was driven by user feedback. Ben‑Yair wrote:

“We’ve heard your feedback that you want more control over the type of results you see when searching in Google Photos.”

She added that Google had improved the quality of several popular searches based on that feedback and emphasized the importance of the search feature:

“We know search in Photos is one of the most loved and used features and we’re committed to getting this experience right, so please keep the feedback coming! It helps us build a more magical experience for everyone.”
