Google’s latest February Play System update is here, and it includes a short but intriguing item in the changelog:

[Phone] With the new local file backup feature, you can automatically save your downloaded documents to Google Drive, ensuring they are safe and accessible from any of your devices.

If that sounds familiar, it should. We’ve been tracking this exact feature for months through APK teardowns. Now that Google has finally acknowledged it publicly, we can clear up the confusion and explain what this feature is and isn’t.

What the local file backup feature does

• It only covers files downloaded to your Android device, not the entire internal storage.
• Android uses Google Drive to store these backup copies, similar to how Google Photos handles images and videos.
• Backed‑up files are stored as static copies; they are not continuously synced. Changes made locally after the backup won’t appear in Drive, and edits made in Drive won’t sync back to the device.

Until now, Android backups have been split into two main buckets:

1. Photos & videos – backed up via Google Photos.
2. Other device data – includes settings, call history, and some app data.

Files downloaded from Chrome, email apps, or messaging services were excluded from Drive backups. PDFs, resumes, tickets, invoices, and installers in the /Downloads folder therefore required manual uploading. This new feature finally closes that gap.

Based on UI strings and warning screens seen in development builds, Google appears to be focusing on common document‑style file types, so not every format may be supported.

When will you actually see it?

As with most Play System features, the new local file backup feature will roll out server‑side. It won’t land on every phone immediately; Google typically deploys Play System updates gradually, so most users will need to wait for the rollout to reach their device.
