Gildav
Source: Dev.to
Issue Description
I was using Gildav (app) on macOS and the app launched fine, but it couldn’t open or save any files. There was no error dialog—just silent failure. Initially I thought it was a bug in the app, but it turned out to be macOS privacy restrictions.
What Didn’t Work
- Deleting and reinstalling the app.
- Moving the app to a different folder (e.g., Applications) and relaunching.
- Placing test files on the Desktop.
- Manually checking file permissions via Finder → Get Info.
All of these steps left the problem unchanged.
What Actually Helped
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access.
- Click the “+” button and add Gildav from the Applications folder.
- Ensure the toggle is turned on.
- Fully quit the app and relaunch it.
After these steps, Gildav could access files in Documents, save outputs, and read from external drives.

Why This Happens More Often Now
Since macOS Mojave (and increasingly in Ventura and Sonoma), Apple has tightened privacy controls. Apps must explicitly request access to:
- Desktop
- Documents
- Downloads
- External volumes
- Network volumes
- Removable media
If an app doesn’t prompt correctly—or if “Don’t Allow” was clicked once—macOS silently blocks access without further warnings.
Additional Testing
I initially tried enabling access under Files and Folders, but Gildav didn’t appear in that list, so there was nothing to toggle. Adding the app to Full Disk Access overrides the sandbox limitation, granting broad read/write capability. This should only be done for trusted utilities, and the app must be fully quit and relaunched after the change.
Performance and Stability
After granting the necessary permissions, the app ran normally with no crashes, CPU spikes, or background issues. The problem was purely permission‑related.
What I’ll Do Differently Next Time
- Immediately check Privacy & Security when an app can’t access files.
- Look under “Files and Folders” first.
- If the app isn’t listed, consider adding it to “Full Disk Access.”
- Fully quit and relaunch the app after adjusting permissions.
- Only grant broad access to apps you trust.
Quick Checklist
- Check Privacy & Security if an app can’t see files.
- Files and Folders: verify the app is listed.
- Full Disk Access: add the app if it’s missing.
- Quit and relaunch the app after changes.
- Grant broad access only to trusted apps.
