TL;DR
- Google is now “open” to putting ads in the standalone Gemini app.
- Exec Philipp Schindler says ad formats that work in AI Mode could be carried over to Gemini.
Gemini’s ad‑free reputation at risk
The Gemini app has long been a refuge from the constant clutter of the modern web. It has featured no banners or sponsored snippets, offering a clean interface for users.
During Google’s Q1 2026 earnings call, chief business officer Philipp Schindler confirmed the company is open to inserting ads into the standalone Gemini app, as reported by Business Insider1. While Google isn’t rushing to implement them, Schindler added that any ad format that proves successful in Google’s new AI Mode for Search could also appear in Gemini2.
Google already runs ads in AI Overviews and is testing AI Mode, a conversational search interface. Until now, the Gemini app has remained ad‑free; in January, Google’s VP of global ads told Business Insider there were “no plans” to change this. Three months later, the stance has shifted to being “open‑minded.”
Why the shift?
The primary driver is financial. Schindler stated that ads can be valuable and helpful commercial information when implemented effectively, and they help scale products “to reach billions of people.”
Adweek reported that Google had already briefed agency buyers about plans for Gemini ad placements in 20263.
Subscription model vs. ads
Gemini already offers paid subscriptions, and Google recently announced 350 million total subscribers across its bundles. However, subscription revenue alone may not be enough to keep the chatbot ad‑free, especially as competitors like OpenAI are now showing ChatGPT ads to free users4.
