Google is preparing to let Gemini‑powered agents control your computer and “organize your files,” in a move to rival Claude Cowork.

At present, the Gemini app for macOS consists of two key features:

  • A native chat interface reminiscent of the web app.
  • An Alt‑Space shortcut that opens Gemini from anywhere, allowing you to share your current window and give the AI visual context of your task.

Let’s get work done together

What are you working on?

Google’s ambitions become clearer through four example prompts you can give to a Gemini agent:

  1. Convert my files to a sheet
Scan a local folder (e.g., invoices or reports), extract the data, and structure it into a Google Sheet.

  2. Organize my folders
Find unorganized files in your Desktop or Downloads folder, group them by type or context, and archive the clutter.

  3. Standardize my files
Read file metadata and batch‑rename hundreds of chaotic files into clean, readable subfolders.

  4. Close the loop on my last meeting
Grab the latest Meet transcript or notes Doc from your last meeting, and draft a follow‑up email with highlights and action items.

The first three prompts focus on using Gemini to organize files on your Mac and integrate them with Google Workspace apps—core productivity features in a post‑Claude Cowork world. Under the hood, these actions would rely on Screen Access and Accessibility features to let Gemini see your screen and control your mouse/keyboard. The fourth prompt shifts the focus to Google apps such as Meet, Docs, and Gmail.

Taken together, these prompts suggest Google is aiming to let Gemini handle more tasks on your behalf. It’s worth noting that Gemini’s agent capabilities on macOS could be broader than what’s currently available on Android, where only a limited set of devices (e.g., Galaxy S26 series) can ask Gemini to automate simple in‑app tasks like ordering food.

By comparison, Google appears poised to turn Gemini for macOS into a proper competitor to Claude Cowork. This effort builds on Google’s earlier experimentation with agentic work, such as the Gemini 2.5 Computer Use preview. New agentic features for Gemini should be welcome news for organizations that rely on Google Workspace.
