ZDNET’s key takeaways

  • Google has added new Gemini tools to Sheets, Docs, and Slides.
  • Gemini can access your Gmail, Drive, and more for relevant info.
  • You can create entire spreadsheets or documents with a prompt.

Google is introducing several new Gemini integrations across Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Drive. The most notable feature helps you create projects from the beginning. Gemini can now access your email, Drive, and other documents to craft entire spreadsheets in Sheets, presentations in Slides, or documents in Docs.

You can tell Gemini which sources to access (it won’t access anything unless you specifically request it), and when it creates something, you’ll see notations of what it actually used.

What’s new with Gemini in Sheets

The most useful change is coming to Sheets.

  • Full spreadsheet creation – Tell Gemini what you’re working on (e.g., “Help me organize my upcoming move by making a checklist for packing each room, a contact list for utilities in my new city, and a spreadsheet to track moving company quotes from my email inbox.”) and Gemini will craft an entire spreadsheet, pulling relevant information from your Gmail and Drive files.
  • Editing existing sheets – Gemini can add tables or dashboards, and you can use “Fill with Gemini” to enter data, categorize information, or summarize data using Google Search. For example, you might ask Gemini to track college applications, and it will fill in details such as due dates and tuition.

What’s new with Gemini in Docs

Gemini already refines writing in Docs, and now it offers even more personalized help.

  • Context‑aware drafting – Describe what you want, and Gemini will use contextual information to create a draft (e.g., “Put together a newsletter for my neighborhood based on the last HOA meeting notes in my email.”).
  • Match writing style – A new option lets Gemini adjust a document so that every part fits your tone, voice, or the style of a reference document.

What’s new with Gemini in Slides

Slides will soon allow Gemini to create full projects from scratch. When the feature launches, you’ll be able to generate complete layouts, editable diagrams, or entire presentations from a prompt.

In the meantime, you can:

  • Ask Gemini to create a new slide that fits your overall theme and pulls relevant information from your files, emails, and the web.
  • Edit a single slide with commands like “make this match the colors of every other slide” or “make this less flashy.”

What’s new with Gemini in Drive

Drive now offers AI‑powered insights:

  • AI Overview – At the top of Drive, you can see a summary of relevant information for a file.
  • Complex queries – Ask detailed questions such as, “What specific things should my tax advisor know before I file this year’s tax returns?” and Gemini will provide concise answers.

These features are rolling out gradually, starting with Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers and Workspace users.
