TL;DR
- Google could be gearing up to add a cursor mode to Gboard for easier cursor movement and swiping.
- The Gboard app already has a glide cursor control feature, but it does not support easy line changing or scrolling.
- By holding down the space bar, users will be able to activate a virtual trackpad for simple cursor movement in any direction.
Overview
Gboard is a highly customizable Android keyboard with extensive gesture support, including glide typing, trail, and delete. To move the cursor in a text field, Android users can tap and hold the insertion point and release it at a specific spot. Gboard also offers glide cursor control, which lets users move the cursor left‑to‑right by holding and swiping along the space bar.
Current cursor control limitations
The existing glide cursor control only supports horizontal swiping. To move between lines or paragraphs, users must keep swiping left or right until they reach the end of a line, which then moves the cursor up or down. This method is cumbersome for scrolling through large blocks of text, especially on large phones or foldable devices.
New cursor mode (beta discovery)
In version 16.8.2.867538971-beta-arm64-v8a, an early look reveals a dedicated cursor mode that turns the Gboard keyboard area into a virtual trackpad:
- Activation: Hold down the space bar.
- Interface: A virtual touch area replaces the digital keys, and a cursor appears on the screen.
- Functionality: Dragging the cursor moves the text insertion point in any direction, even allowing the cursor to leave the Gboard area.
- Advantages: Unrestricted movement enables easy scrolling and line/paragraph navigation, addressing the shortcomings of the current glide cursor control.
This feature could be particularly useful on devices with large displays where reaching the top of the screen with a finger is difficult.
Potential impact
It is not yet clear whether this new cursor mode will replace the existing glide cursor control or exist alongside it. The release timeline is also unknown. If implemented, it would resolve a key limitation of Gboard’s cursor handling and be a welcome addition for power users.
