EU investigates Shein’s ‘addictive design’ and illegal sex dolls
Source: The Verge
Investigation Overview
The European Union has opened a formal investigation into Shein after French regulators found listings for “child‑like sex dolls” on the retail platform last year. The investigation will assess whether the systems Shein uses to curb illegal product sales are compliant with the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), including “content which could constitute child sexual abuse material.”
Key Concerns
- Transparency of content recommendation systems – The Commission will examine how Shein’s algorithms recommend products and content to users.
- Addictive design practices – Authorities are scrutinising Shein’s gamified programmes that award points and other rewards, which may encourage excessive use of the platform.
