Discord will restrict your account next month unless you scan ID or face

Overview
Discord announced a global “teen‑by‑default” policy that will restrict all user accounts unless users verify their age. Starting in March, accounts will be treated as if the user is under 13, limiting access to certain features and content.
The company explained the change in its press release.
Restrictions
- Content Filters – Sensitive content remains blurred and can only be unblurred by users verified as adults.
- Age‑gated Spaces – Only age‑verified adults can access age‑restricted channels, servers, and app commands.
- Message Request Inbox – Direct messages from unknown users are routed to a separate inbox by default; only adult‑verified users can modify this setting.
- Friend Request Alerts – Users receive warning prompts for friend requests from people they may not know.
- Stage Restrictions – Only age‑verified adults may speak on stage in servers.
Age Verification Methods
Users can verify their age in one of two ways:
- ID Scan – Submit a form of identification to Discord’s vendors. Discord states that scanned documents are deleted quickly.
- Facial Age Estimation – A fully on‑device process using video selfies; the data never leaves the user’s device.
Discord indicated that additional verification options may be added later.
Rollout Timeline
The restrictions will be introduced through a phased global rollout to both new and existing users in early March.
Context
Age verification is becoming more common across platforms; for example, YouTube has implemented AI‑based age verification for users see details. Discord’s approach is among the most aggressive implementations to date.
