Discord Age Verification Rollout
Discord announced that starting next month it will roll out global age verification. All accounts will default to a “teen‑appropriate” experience unless the user proves they are an adult.
Restrictions for unverified users
- No access to age‑restricted servers and channels.
- Inability to speak in Discord’s “stage” (livestream‑like) channels.
- Automatic content filters for graphic or sensitive material.
- Warning prompts for friend requests from unfamiliar users.
- Direct messages from unfamiliar users are filtered into a separate inbox.
Verification options
- Facial age estimation – an AI analyzes a video selfie; the data never leaves the user’s device.
- Government ID submission – a photo of an identification document is sent to Discord’s vendor partners for verification.
If the AI‑based age estimate is incorrect, users can appeal or choose the ID‑based method instead. Discord states that ID images are deleted quickly, “in most cases, immediately after age confirmation.”
