Bungie’s Stance on Cheating in Marathon

Bungie isn’t taking any prisoners when it comes to cheating on its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. In a detailed blog post outlining its anti‑cheat measures, the company stated:

“We are taking a strong stance against cheating and anyone found to be cheating or developing cheats will be permanently banned from playing Marathon forever, no second chances.”

The post also mentioned that an appeals system will be available for affected players.

Technical Anti‑Cheat Measures

  • Server Authority: Marathon’s dedicated servers have full authority over movement, shooting, actions, and inventory. By handling these core functions server‑side, the game aims to deliver smoother gunplay and block cheats such as teleportation, unlimited ammo, or damage manipulation.
  • Fog of War: A “Fog of War” system limits each player’s client to see only certain regions of the map, helping to prevent wall hacks, ESP cheats, and loot revealers.
  • BattlEye Integration: The game uses BattlEye, a kernel‑level anti‑cheat solution also employed by titles like Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege, and Destiny 2.

Reconnection & Gear Recovery

If a player disconnects, they will be able to reconnect to their run without issues. Should server problems prevent reconnection, Bungie said it will “attempt to return the starting gear to all impacted players.”

Release Timeline

  • Preview Weekend – Server Slam: February 26 (starts)
  • Official Launch: March 5

Context: Cheating in Other Extraction Shooters

Bungie’s proactive approach comes as other extraction shooters grapple with cheating. For example, Arc Raiders (developed by Embark Studios) introduced a three‑strike system to combat cheats, a measure some players have criticized as too lenient.
