Overview

Robotics company Intrinsic announced it will be folding into Google as the tech giant bets on the future of physical AI in manufacturing. Intrinsic focuses on software tools that make robots more affordable and easier to use, and on adaptive intelligence that helps robots perform real‑world tasks.

Background

Intrinsic was launched in 2021 as an Alphabet “Other Bets” project, part of a portfolio of high‑risk, high‑payoff startups that also includes Waymo. The project will now operate as a distinct group within Google, leveraging Gemini and Google Cloud while collaborating closely with the Google DeepMind team.

Platform

The company describes its platform as “the Android of robotics,” offering a universal canvas where developers can build apps for different robots, cameras, sensors, and more. Meta has expressed interest in pursuing a similar business model.

Adaptive Intelligence

At the intersection of software and physical AI, Intrinsic aims to integrate adaptive intelligence into robots, enabling them to:

  • Perceive their surroundings
  • Reason about changes in processes
  • React to environmental shifts

The goal is robots that can handle real‑world tasks with greater autonomy and flexibility.

Strategic Fit

The move complements Google’s past work in robotics, such as its former ownership of Boston Dynamics (sold in 2017). The Google DeepMind team has also developed Gemini‑based models for robotics in the past.
