The first‑gen AirTag remains a solid tracker, though you’ll need a separate accessory to attach it to your belongings. With Apple’s second‑gen AirTags now widely available, inventory of the original model is beginning to dwindle. Amazon has stopped selling single units, but you can still find a four‑pack for around $64 (about $35 off) at Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy during Presidents Day sales—just $2 shy of the bundle’s best price to date. If you only need one, Walmart offers a single tracker for $17 ($12 off).

Where to Buy

RetailerPrice (four‑pack)

Walmart$99$64
Best Buy$99$64.99

Why the First‑Gen AirTag Still Holds Up

  • Precise location via Find My – Like the second‑gen model, the original AirTag taps into Apple’s extensive Find My network and uses ultra‑wideband (UWB) technology. Open the Find My app and follow on‑screen arrows, sounds, or vibrations to locate an item, even if it’s slipped between car seats.
  • Software perks – You can share an AirTag’s location with up to five people, which is handy for families traveling together. Some airlines (e.g., American Airlines and Virgin Atlantic) also allow temporary location sharing.
  • Long‑lasting battery – The built‑in battery lasts up to a year. When it runs out, simply replace the CR2032 cell; no need to replace the whole tracker.
  • Durability – With an IP67 rating, the AirTag is protected against dust and light rain.

Differences vs. Second‑Gen AirTag

  • Upgraded UWB chip – The newer model offers more precise location tracking.
  • Extended range – Second‑gen AirTags can locate items that are farther away.
  • Louder speaker – The speaker on the second‑gen is about 50 % louder, making it easier to hear alerts.

Despite these upgrades, the original AirTag remains one of the better trackers on the market and is a worthwhile purchase while it’s still available.
