Apple introduces a cheaper option for App Store subscriptions
Apple is giving App Store developers a new way to attract subscribers with lower‑priced plans tied to a year‑long commitment. The company announced on Monday that it will introduce a subscription option allowing customers to pay for their auto‑renewing subscriptions on a monthly basis while committing to a 12‑month plan. This model lets developers offer discounted rates in exchange for more predictable long‑term revenue.
How the model works
- Customers see a lower monthly price that reflects the discount they receive when purchasing an annual subscription instead of a month‑to‑month option.
- By committing to a 12‑month term, users can lock in the reduced rate.
- Apple will provide clear information about payment structure and cancellation policies before users commit.
If a user cancels, the subscription remains active until the end of the 12‑month term, and monthly payments continue to be deducted from their Apple account until that point. Customers can view the number of completed and remaining payments in their Apple Account, and Apple will send reminder emails and optional push notifications ahead of renewal dates.
Availability
- The option will not be available to developers in the United States or Singapore at launch.
- Apple has not explained the exclusion, but it coincides with ongoing App Store litigation in the U.S. and Singapore’s distinct payments and consumer‑protection landscape.
The new monthly‑with‑annual‑commitment subscriptions will be available worldwide to customers on:
- iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, visionOS 26.4, or later
- With the release of iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5 in May
Developers can configure this subscription type in App Store Connect and test it in Xcode.
Potential concerns
- While the option offers a better deal, it can also lock users into longer‑term plans if they are not vigilant about cancellations.
- Because the subscriptions auto‑renew, a customer could unintentionally agree to another 12‑month commitment if they forget to cancel before renewal.
