Age verification rollout in the UK
Apple is adding age verification to the UK in the iOS 26.4 beta. After installation, users are prompted to confirm they are over 18. As shown in screenshots posted to Reddit, Apple states that users who don’t confirm their age “will not be able to download and purchase apps or make in‑app purchases.”
In the screenshots Apple explains that it may automatically confirm a user’s age using the payment method linked to the account or the age associated with the Apple ID. If that isn’t possible, the system can ask users to scan their credit cards, and some users reported being offered the option to scan a government‑issued ID.
The Verge reached out to Apple for additional details but has not yet received a response.
Wider context
This update arrives as Apple and other tech companies face growing age‑verification requirements worldwide. Earlier this week Apple announced that it will begin blocking users in Australia, Brazil, and Singapore from downloading apps rated 18+ unless they verify their adulthood using “reasonable methods.” The company will also start sharing age categories with developers to comply with local regulations in Utah and Louisiana.
