Background

Last November, Google announced a cross‑platform feature that lets Google Pixel 10 users share files directly with Apple devices via Quick Share‑AirDrop interoperability. The feature currently works on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, as well as Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Fold.

Expansion Plans

During a recent Pixel Labs tour at Google’s Taipei office, Eric Kay, Vice President of Engineering for the Android platform, said the feature will be expanded to many more Android devices in 2026.

“In 2026, we’re going to be expanding it to a lot more devices.”

Kay added that Google has spent considerable effort ensuring compatibility with iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and that “you should see some exciting announcements coming very soon.”

The comments were reported by Android Authority’s Adamya Sharma, who attended the press briefing.

Technical Details

  • Implementation shift: Instead of tying AirDrop interoperability to a Pixel‑only system component, Google turned the Quick Share extension from a stub system app into a full APK distributed via the Play Store.
  • Deployment advantage: This makes the feature easier to update and deploy across devices from different manufacturers, indicating a move toward a broader Android feature rather than a Pixel‑exclusive one.
  • Industry support: Qualcomm has hinted that it is developing Quick Share‑AirDrop interoperability support for Snapdragon‑powered phones.

Security Model

Google states that the Quick Share‑AirDrop interoperability uses a multi‑layered security model, including:

  1. An encrypted transfer channel.
  2. Built‑in platform protections on both Android and iOS.
  3. An explicit consent step before any file is received.
