Overview

Adobe announced on Tuesday that its AI assistant for Photoshop is now available to users in beta on the web and in the mobile apps. The company is also adding new AI‑powered image‑editing capabilities to Firefly, its tool for media generation and editing.

The creative‑tooling company first introduced an AI assistant for Photoshop during its MAX event in October (source). The feature, now rolling out to users, can help remove objects or people from images, change colors, or adjust lighting through natural‑language prompts. Users can also ask the assistant to add a soft glow, crop to a specific format, enhance shadows, or transform the background for a different look.

Adobe said that paid Photoshop users will be able to create unlimited generations with the AI assistant through April 9, while free users start with 20 generations.

AI Markup (Public Beta)

A new feature called AI markup lets users draw markers on the screen and have the AI assistant transform the selected objects. For example, you can draw a flower or mark an object to remove, and the assistant will modify the background accordingly.

Firefly Enhancements

Adobe is also expanding Firefly’s image‑editing toolbox:

  • Generative Fill – now available in Firefly, mirroring the feature that has been in Photoshop for a few years (details). It allows replacing or adding objects and modifying backgrounds.
  • Generative Remove – a one‑click tool for object removal.
  • Generative Expand – increases image size using AI.
  • Generative Upscale – enhances image resolution.

In February, Adobe announced that Firefly subscribers can enjoy unlimited generations to encourage increased usage (announcement). The platform now includes more than 25 third‑party video and image generation models, such as Google’s Nano Banana 2, OpenAI’s Image Generation, Runway’s Gen‑4.5, and Black Forest Labs’ Flux 2 Pro.
