If you’ve been paying attention to tech news, you may have seen that the U.S. Federal Government is launching Tech Force:
“The Trump administration on Monday unveiled a new initiative dubbed the ‘U.S. Tech Force,’ comprising about 1,000 engineers and other specialists who will work on artificial intelligence infrastructure and other technology projects throughout the federal government.” – CNBC
Visiting the official website reveals a few striking details.
Font choice (the funny side)
The title font for a group working on “tech for the American People” is Canadian. The site uses PP Neue Montreal, “inspired by what makes Montreal the great design city it is today.” Montreal is a city in Québec, which is “the most anti‑Donald Trump province in Canada” – see the discussion on The Conversation.
Cover image (the tragic side)
The site’s hero image looks like a night‑time drone shot over Washington, D.C., evoking a surveillance vibe. The image is taken from the site’s cover image.
Recruitment imagery (borg‑level creepy)
Tech Force’s recruitment page describes an “elite group of ~1,000 technology specialists… to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) implementation.” The visual presentation, however, resembles a soulless, hooded automaton with a radio antenna attached to a cyborg CRT head.
The language suggests they are literally looking for machine men to build the AI machinery for the federal government.
A call to humanity
If you consider applying, remember Charlie Chaplin’s words: “You are not machines!” – from his final speech in The Great Dictator.
Machinery that promises abundance has left us wanting. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness is hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost…
The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed—the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, dictators will die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. As long as men die, liberty will never perish.
Soldiers! Don’t give yourselves to brutes—men who despise you, enslave you, regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think, and what to feel! Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men—machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! Fight for liberty, not for slavery.
