Compatibility with MacBook Neo

Parallels, the company behind the popular virtualization software that lets you run Windows and other operating systems on a Mac, has confirmed that Parallels Desktop works on the MacBook Neo. In a recent update on its website, Parallels said initial tests show the software running stably, though performance is still being evaluated.

Hardware considerations

  • The MacBook Neo is powered by an A18 Pro chip, the same ARM‑based architecture used in the iPhone 16 Pro and the M‑series Macs. This means it can technically run Parallels’ Windows virtual machine.
  • The device ships with 8 GB of RAM. Windows 11 requires a minimum of 4 GB, leaving very little headroom for macOS, Mac apps, and the virtual machine simultaneously.
  • The Neo is fan‑less, so under heavy CPU or GPU load the chip will throttle its clock speeds, which can noticeably degrade performance.

Practical usage

Parallels Desktop may be a viable option for Neo owners who need only light Windows usage. However, tasks that place a significant strain on the CPU or GPU are likely to encounter problems due to limited memory and thermal constraints.

For a smoother Windows‑on‑Mac experience, Parallels recommends a Mac with 16 GB of unified memory or more, such as the newer MacBook Air M5 or a MacBook Pro.

Verdict

If you’re satisfied with macOS and want a budget‑friendly laptop, the MacBook Neo has been called the best $600 laptop in recent reviews. But for power users or anyone needing robust Windows performance, a higher‑spec Mac is advisable.
