It’s been a busy week shutting things down at OpenAI. Just days after OpenAI unceremoniously pulled the plug on its video‑generation app Sora, a new report from the Financial Times claims the company has put plans to launch an X‑rated chatbot on hold “indefinitely.”
Financial Times report on the adult chatbot
- The adult‑mode feature for ChatGPT was originally promised in the fall of 2025 as an extra option for verified users.
- It was later delayed a few weeks back (Mashable coverage).
- At the time, a company spokesperson said getting the (adult) experience right would “take more time.”
Now, however, the project appears to have been shelved for good. According to the report, OpenAI will instead focus on its core products.
Reasons for shelving the project
- Reputational risk: The recent controversy surrounding the Grok chatbot from xAI, which generated sexualized images of adults and children, highlighted the potential fallout of a sexualized AI.
- Investor and staff concerns: Both groups raised alarms about the societal impact of a sexualized AI.
- Technical challenges: The bot struggled to accurately distinguish between adults and minors, with an error rate of over 10 %.
- Strategic focus: OpenAI is prioritising its core offerings and aiming to avoid further legal entanglements.
Legal context
- The shutdown of Sora and the abandonment of the adult mode seem tied to OpenAI’s broader effort to reduce the number of lawsuits it faces.
- Over the past six months, several lawsuits were filed after young people died by suicide following interactions with ChatGPT. This prompted OpenAI to introduce an age‑prediction system in January (Mashable article).
- Disclosure: Ziff Davis, Mashable’s parent company, filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in April, alleging that OpenAI infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.
