Overview of the AI‑Powered Shorts Remix Test
YouTube Shorts is experimenting with AI tools that let creators build on short‑form videos in new ways. The test is being rolled out to a small group of English‑only creators and includes two distinct capabilities:
- Reimagine – Transform a single frame from an existing Short into an entirely new video using custom or suggested prompts.
- Add object – Insert items into a scene from the original Short (up to 8 seconds) via prompts.
Reimagine
- Users select a single frame from a Short.
- With a custom or suggested prompt, the AI generates a brand‑new video based on that frame.
- Creators can also upload up to two reference photos to guide the generation.
Add Object
- Allows insertion of new items into a scene from the original Short.
- The addition can last up to 8 seconds.
- Prompts can be either suggested by YouTube or created by the user.
Attribution and Opt‑Out
- Every Short created with these AI tools automatically links back to the original Short.
- Creators can opt out of having their Shorts eligible for AI‑generated recreations.
- Opting out also disables traditional remix functionality.
YouTube provides additional details in its support thread:
We’re starting to test new capabilities in the Shorts Remix menu to help creators bring their ideas to life. After tapping Remix on an eligible Short, a small group of creators (English only) will either see “Add an object” or “Reimagine” options.
