YouTube Premium Lite now gets background play and downloadable content

If the lack of background play or downloadable offline content was one of the reasons you were holding off on subscribing to YouTube’s most affordable paid plan, there’s good news.

In an announcement on its website, YouTube confirmed that both background playback and offline downloads are coming to the $7.99‑per‑month YouTube Premium Lite subscription.

YouTube Premium vs. Premium Lite

• YouTube Premium – $13.99 / month

  • Completely ad‑free experience across all of YouTube.
  • Includes background play and offline downloads.
  • Provides ad‑free access to YouTube Music at no extra cost.

• YouTube Premium Lite – $7.99 / month

  • Ad‑free on most YouTube videos (ads still appear on Shorts, music content, and during search/browse).
  • Previously lacked background play and download capabilities (now added).
  • Does not include ad‑free YouTube Music; that remains a Premium‑exclusive benefit.

New Features for Premium Lite

• Background Play – Most YouTube videos can now continue playing when you switch apps or lock your device.
• Offline Downloads – Most videos can be saved for offline viewing.

The same content restrictions that applied to the ad‑free experience still apply:

• YouTube Shorts and music content cannot be played in the background or downloaded.

YouTube noted that a significant number of users had requested these features, and they are now available to Premium Lite subscribers.

Last year, YouTube reported that more than 125 million people subscribe to its paid services — a milestone highlighted in a blog post. Around the same time, the company announced the rollout of the more affordable tier, YouTube Premium Lite, in a separate announcement.

With the addition of background play and downloadable content, Premium Lite now offers a more complete experience while remaining the most budget‑friendly YouTube subscription.
