TL;DR

  • YouTube Music is rolling out AI Playlist, letting Premium subscribers generate playlists using text or voice prompts on Android and iOS.
  • The feature is similar to Spotify’s Prompted Playlists, which launched last month.
  • Google has shared few details, and early reactions show mixed feelings about the growing AI presence.

Overview

Google is pushing AI into every corner of its ecosystem. In the past 24 hours, we’ve seen experiments like people chatting with Google Translate and a new Gemini integration for Google Maps. Now, YouTube Music adds an AI Playlist feature that creates playlists from a description of the vibe you want, using either text or voice.

The YouTube team announced the rollout in an X post. It’s available now for YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium subscribers on Android and iOS. You can find it under the Library tab → NewAI Playlist. The option displays a Gemini logo, though the Gemini chatbot isn’t explicitly mentioned.

How to use it

  1. On Android or iOS, tap the New button in the Library tab of YouTube Music.
  2. Select AI Playlist (see screenshot from the X post).
  3. Write or speak a mood, idea, or genre, and let the app generate a personalized playlist.

Background

YouTube Music already offered an AI‑driven feature called Ask Music (released in 2024) that lets users request songs using natural language. The new AI Playlist appears to be an evolution of that concept, now integrated directly into the playlist‑creation flow and functioning more like a playlist generator than a radio‑style experience.

Comparison with Spotify

Spotify introduced its own prompt‑based playlist creator, Prompted Playlists, just last month. YouTube Music’s rollout seems timed to keep pace with this competitor, offering a similar way to generate playlists from textual or spoken prompts.

User reactions

Comments on the X announcement show a mix of responses:

  • Some users appreciate the convenience of instantly turning a mood into a playlist.
  • Others express AI fatigue, questioning why more AI features are being added when they didn’t ask for them.
  • A few users are curious about the flexibility and control they’ll have after a playlist is generated.

Google has not detailed how much customization will be possible once a playlist is created. If you’ve tried the feature, feel free to share your experience in the comments.
