TL;DR

  • Skoda has developed the DuoBell, a mechanical bicycle bell designed specifically to be heard through noise‑cancelling headphones.
  • Research identified a frequency “gap” between 750 Hz and 780 Hz where ANC algorithms are least effective at suppressing external noise.
  • The bell also uses a dual‑resonator system and an irregular striking mechanism, helping prevent ANC algorithms from processing and blocking the sound.

Introduction

Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) has become very effective on both headphones and earphones. As more users adopt devices with powerful ANC, a side effect has emerged: pedestrians become less aware of their surroundings, increasing the risk of collisions with cyclists whose traditional mechanical bells are often masked by ANC.

Czech car manufacturer Škoda, which originally produced bicycles, is addressing this safety issue with the Škoda DuoBell—the first bicycle bell engineered to penetrate ANC on headphones.

How the DuoBell Works

The DuoBell is a fully mechanical device that exploits a weakness in ANC algorithms:

  1. Frequency Gap Exploitation – Acoustic testing by Škoda and researchers at the University of Salford identified a narrow band between 750 Hz and 780 Hz where ANC performance drops. The DuoBell is tuned to emit sound within this band.
  2. Dual‑Resonator System – An additional resonator is tuned to a higher frequency, broadening the audible range and making the bell harder to filter out.
  3. Irregular Striking Mechanism – A specially designed hammer delivers rapid, irregular strikes, producing sound waves that ANC processors cannot react to quickly enough.

Safety Implications

With ANC headphones becoming increasingly common, simple mechanical solutions like the DuoBell could play a crucial role in urban safety. However, continued advancements in ANC technology may eventually close the “safety gap.” Collaboration across the audio industry could help maintain a balance that protects both listeners and pedestrians.
