X launches stand-alone XChat app on iOS
Source: TechCrunch
Launch Overview
XChat, X’s stand‑alone messaging app, launched to the public on Friday. Initially available on iOS devices, the app lets users connect with their X contacts for messaging, file sharing, audio and video calls, and group chats.
Background
- The company began publicly testing XChat with a small group of beta users earlier this year — see the TechCrunch report.
- XChat is a key piece of X’s strategic vision, positioning the social network as a launchpad for services such as messaging and payments. Payments are also being tested as a dedicated app (TechCrunch), though not yet publicly available.
Shift from the “Everything App” Plan
Elon Musk’s earlier goal was to make X an “everything app” that combined messaging, payments, creator content, shopping, AI, and more. Instead, xAI — Musk’s AI company that owns X and is itself owned by SpaceX (TechCrunch) — is now offering a suite of separate apps to increase consumer touchpoints.
Features at Launch
- Messaging and calling (audio/video)
- Privacy‑focused tools: edit/delete messages for everyone, disappearing messages, screenshot blocking
- No ads or tracking mechanisms
- Claims of end‑to‑end encryption and PIN protection (security experts have previously disputed these claims; see The Register)
Security Concerns
Security experts warned that XChat may be less secure than established encrypted messaging apps like Signal when it was first introduced (TechCrunch). They will need to reassess the dedicated app now that it is broadly available.
Communities Integration
XChat will also serve as the new home for X’s Communities, which are being shut down due to low usage and spam (TechCrunch). This transition could boost XChat installs as community members migrate.
Future Updates
X lead designer Benji Taylor hinted that XChat is “just the beginning of what we’re building for messaging” (tweet). More features and improvements are expected.
