WordPress.com adds an AI Assistant that can edit, adjust styles, create images, and more

Overview
WordPress.com, the website hosting platform from Automattic, will now include a built‑in WordPress AI assistant, the company announced on Tuesday. The feature works inside the site editor, understands the site’s content and layout, and lets owners make changes with natural‑language commands.
Layout and Style Adjustments
You can adjust the site’s layout, style, or other patterns by issuing commands to the AI assistant and see the changes reflected in real time. Prompts don’t need to be precise; examples include:
- “Make this section feel more modern or spacious.”
- “Change my site’s colors to be brighter and bolder.”
- “Give me more font options that feel clean and professional.”
You can also direct the AI to add or modify layout elements, such as “add a contact page” or “add a testimonials section below this section.” These adjustments work with block themes (not classic themes). If you’re using a classic theme, the assistant won’t appear in the editor.

Content Editing and Collaboration
The AI assistant can update site content, for example by rewriting a bio to sound more confident or translating a section into another language. It also functions as an editor, offering headline suggestions, fact checks, and grammar improvements.
Through the Block Notes editor introduced in WordPress 6.9, you can collaborate with teammates and invoke the AI by typing @ai followed by your request. The assistant replies directly in the notes, including relevant links and citations.

Image Generation and Editing
For visual assistance, the AI leverages Google Gemini’s Nano Banana models. In the Media Library, a new Generate Image button lets you create new images or edit existing ones. You can specify requirements such as aspect ratios or style preferences.
