Waymo’s spent robotaxi batteries will be used as grid storage

Deal Overview
Waymo has announced a deal with energy storage company B2U to repurpose retired robotaxi batteries for electricity grids in California and Texas. The partnership will involve the deployment of “hundreds of megawatts of storage capacity,” though specific details were not disclosed.
The agreement addresses the end‑of‑life treatment of the thousands of robotaxis Waymo has deployed across the United States. Most of these vehicles are Jaguar I‑Pace EVs, with a limited number of vans from Chinese automaker Zeekr also in service.
B2U is among several firms focusing on battery repurposing rather than recycling. Redwood Materials, founded by former Tesla CTO JB Straubel and partially backed by Waymo’s parent company Alphabet, has also launched a second‑life storage business using used EV batteries.
