visionOS 26.4 beta 1 debuted today. In addition to supporting Apple Podcasts’ new video features, the update also unlocks foveated streaming for apps and games.
Apple explains benefits of new foveated streaming support in visionOS 26.4
Per Apple’s official visionOS 26.4 release notes:
“visionOS 26.4 supports NVIDIA CloudXR with foveated streaming, enabling apps to display high‑resolution, low‑latency immersive content on Apple Vision Pro.”
In short, it’s a new tool that apps and games can use to deliver improved experiences on Apple Vision Pro.
From Apple’s developer documentation:
If you have an existing virtual reality game, experience, or application built for desktop computers or a cloud server, you can stream it to Apple Vision Pro with the Foveated Streaming framework.
Foveated Streaming allows the endpoint to stream high‑quality content only where necessary, based on the approximate region where the user is looking, ensuring performance. On Apple Vision Pro, native spatial content can be layered over the streamed content. For example, a racing game could render the car’s interior gauges with RealityKit while streaming the processor‑intensive outdoor environment from a remote computer.
Since NVIDIA CloudXR is used by other VR and computing platforms, the hope is that foveated streaming will make it easier to bring existing apps and games to Apple Vision Pro. The feature can also enhance existing visionOS apps. Apple gives another example: a flight simulator could render the cockpit with RealityKit and stream a processor‑intensive landscape from a remote computer.
It’s not yet clear whether any of Apple’s native visionOS apps currently use this technology, but the company is likely to showcase best practices for developers.
