Rainmaker, a company founded in 2023, announced that its drone‑based cloud‑seeding technology produced 143 million gallons of freshwater for residents of Utah and Oregon. The company claims to be the first private company in history to validate the results of cloud‑seeding operations.

Technology

  • Method: Drones disperse silver iodide into clouds.
  • Tracking: Advanced radar and satellite imagery monitor precipitation and cloud‑top changes.
  • Pattern: Drones fly in unique patterns during seeding, allowing operators to compare radar and satellite signatures with the drone flight paths.

Validation Challenges

Cloud‑seeding validation is difficult because:

  • There is no control set for direct comparison.
  • Weather is inherently chaotic and variable.

The Government Accountability Office has labeled the benefits of cloud‑seeding technology as “unproven.” Rainmaker attempts to overcome this by identifying distinct seeding signatures in radar and satellite data.

Results

  • As of April, Rainmaker reported 82 unambiguous seeding signatures that directly linked its operations to precipitation.
  • In Utah and Oregon, the added water is estimated to meet the annual usage of about 1,750 households—a figure the company says likely represents only a small fraction of its total seasonal generation.
  • Satellite images show cloud holes or depressed cloud tops after seeding, providing visual evidence of the correlation between drone activity and rainfall.

Future Plans

Rainmaker’s stated mission includes:

  • Refilling the Great Salt Lake.
  • Ending drought across the American West.
  • Delivering water abundance worldwide.

The company currently operates in Utah, Idaho, Oregon, California, and Colorado.

Industry Perspective

Ferry, director of Utah’s Natural Resources Department, told the Deseret News that with cloud seeding, “cost per unit of water is so low; it really is the smartest thing we can be doing with our money.”
