macOS 26.3 hints at Apple’s rumored lower‑cost MacBook and two new Studio Display models

macOS 26.3 hints at Apple’s rumored lower‑cost MacBook and two new Studio Display models, according to Macworld’s Filipe Espósito.

Codenames

Espósito found the following codenames within macOS 26.3’s source code and linked them to upcoming products based on prior reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and others.

  • J700 – Lower‑cost MacBook
  • J427 – New Studio Display
  • J527 – Higher‑end Studio Display

These codenames have appeared before. MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris noted they were also present in macOS 26.2 and iOS 18.5 last year.

As more hints stack up, it’s clear that all three products are inching closer to release. The prevailing assumption is that Apple will unveil the lower‑cost MacBook as part of three days of new product announcements in the first week of March. Media would then receive hands‑on time with the laptop during the “Apple Experience” events in New York, London, and Shanghai on Wednesday, March 4 at 9 a.m. ET. The new Studio Displays are expected to launch in the first half of 2026, though it’s unclear whether they will be part of the March announcements.

Mac Studio and Studio Display

Lower‑Cost MacBook

  • Processor: Likely a version of the iPhone 16 Pro’s A18 Pro chip rather than an M‑series chip.
  • Colors: Rumored bright options such as yellow, green, blue, and/or pink.
  • Specs: 12.9‑inch display, 8 GB RAM.
  • Price: Estimates range from $599–$799 US.

If released, this would be an all‑new model positioned below the MacBook Air, reviving the “MacBook” brand (no “Air” or “Pro” designation). Apple previously sold an Intel‑based 12‑inch “MacBook” from 2015‑2019.

New Studio Display Models

  • Model 1 (rumored): 27‑inch screen with mini‑LED backlighting, up to 90 Hz or 120 Hz refresh rate, HDR support, and an A19 or A19 Pro chip. No major design changes are expected.
  • Model 2 (rumored): Higher‑end version, possibly a larger 32‑inch screen (details unconfirmed).

If the next Studio Display receives mini‑LED backlighting and HDR support, its maximum brightness and contrast ratio would exceed the current model. The newer A19/A19 Pro chip (up from the current A13 Bionic) should improve performance, camera capabilities, and more.

Current Studio Display (2022)

  • 27‑inch 5K panel
  • 60 Hz refresh rate
  • Up to 600 nits brightness
  • Built‑in camera and speakers
  • One Thunderbolt 3 port, three USB‑C ports
  • U.S. pricing starts at $1,599
