This MagSafe wallet is nearly perfect, but there's one design choice I can't get past

ZDNET’s key takeaways

  • The Veger X5 is available now for $59.
  • It combines a MagSafe charger, wallet, and tracker with Find My in one device.
  • The wallet can hold only a few cards at a time.

I am an unapologetic MagSafe fanatic. If it has a circular magnet on it, I want it. I’ve used many MagSafe accessories—wallets, batteries, and other devices with tracking—but I’ve never used one that combines all three until now.

Also: These are the closest things to AirTags for Android users (and better in some ways)

The Veger X5 MagSafe wallet pairs a 5,000 mAh MagSafe battery, a kickstand, a wallet that holds two or three cards, and support for Apple’s Find My network. After a week of use, it feels like a “mother ship” calling me home—except for one major complaint.

Design and features

  • The battery pack has the familiar circle of MagSafe magnets, a USB‑C port on the bottom, a power button, and five pips indicating charge level.
  • The backplate is attached with four T5 screws and includes a kickstand that can be set to any angle.
  • When the kickstand is opened, the slot becomes a thumb hole for sliding cards out.

When attached to the back of a phone, the battery powers the device at up to 20 W. However, merging a constantly‑present wallet with a charger that’s only needed intermittently feels like a design mismatch.

Pressing the power button twice puts the charger into an “off” mode, stopping charging until you need it again. This prevents the charger from draining its own battery while the phone remains fully charged.

Initially, the wallet held only two cards—my credit card and driver’s license. By loosening and retightening the four T5 screws, I was able to add an insurance card, but the real issue lay elsewhere.

Also: The wireless charger I recommend to hardcore Apple fans costs just $20 (but can do a lot)

Magnet strength issue

The MagSafe magnets on the wallet are extremely weak. When placed on the phone, the unit spins freely and tends to slip off. In a pocket, it almost always detaches, causing the charger to start powering the phone again. I found myself repeatedly re‑affixing the battery to my phone throughout the day.

ZDNET’s buying advice

I ultimately stopped using the Veger X5 because the weak magnets made it impractical for everyday carry. It does everything I wanted—charging, tracking, and a small wallet—but it can’t reliably hold more than one or two cards. If you only need to carry a single card or two, the Veger X5 could still be a useful, all‑in‑one accessory, provided you keep an eye on its tendency to drain the battery when left attached.
