TL;DR

  • Google is testing new input features to complement Google Home’s Gemini‑powered features.
  • A new option lets you add media within Ask Home, a conversational interface for controlling your smart home or reviewing video feeds.
  • Google is also testing shortcuts to redo or reset chats.

Ask Home Overview

Google Home received a big update in October, introducing Ask Home. This conversational interface works across many areas of the upgraded Google Home app, allowing you to ask Gemini questions about events recorded by security cameras, design automation routines, or give natural‑language instructions instead of following a rigid command syntax.

New Media Input

While Ask Home currently supports only text queries, a new option is being tested that lets users attach images or videos to supplement their questions.

  • A plus (+) button appears to the left of the text input box.
  • Tapping the button opens options to attach media from the camera or gallery.

We were able to attach media, but Ask Home did not yet use it as part of the input, so the exact use cases remain unclear. A likely scenario is analysis of specific shots from security cameras or doorbells—functionality that could also be handled by Gemini directly.

Redo and Reset Chat Buttons

Google is also testing two shortcut buttons:

  • Redo – Regenerates Ask Home’s response if you’re not satisfied.
  • Reset Chat – Clears the conversation context, allowing you to start fresh (similar to a “New Chat” button in other AI chatbots).

These functions work as expected in the test build.

Availability

The features were discovered in version 4.9.51.0 of the Google Home app on Android. They are not yet widely rolled out to users. We’ll continue monitoring and will update when more information becomes available.

⚠️ An APK teardown can predict future features based on work‑in‑progress code, but predicted features may not reach a public release.
