If you’ve spent any time on Instagram, Facebook, X, or any other social media app over the last few days, you’ve almost certainly seen people posting caricatures of themselves — usually accentuated with details about their job, interests, etc.

No, not everyone you know is suddenly rushing out to support local cartoonists to draw these for them — they’re using AI to make these. Last year, it was Studio Ghibli‑style AI art that everyone was obsessed with posting. Now, we’ve moved on to AI caricatures.

If you need an AI caricature in your life and aren’t sure where to start, here’s what to do.

How to make your own AI caricature

AI caricature example

  1. Open the ChatGPT app on your phone or visit the ChatGPT website on your computer. Any AI chatbot with image‑generation capabilities will work, but for the style you see in most posts, use ChatGPT.

  2. In the app, tap the plus icon (+) near the bottom left, choose Photos, and select a close‑up picture of yourself (avoid distant angles or group shots). If you don’t have a suitable photo, tap Camera and snap a quick selfie.

  3. In the prompt box type something like:

Create a caricature of me and my job based on everything you know about me

Press Enter. If you’re not a frequent ChatGPT user, you may be asked a follow‑up question about your job before the image is generated.

  4. Wait a few seconds for the image to be generated. Users with ChatGPT Plus will see faster results.

  5. When the caricature appears, tap it to save a copy to your device, share it on social media, or edit it further. You can repeat the process with a different photo for a new version.

Should you join the viral AI caricature trend?

Joining the AI caricature trend is simple, but whether you should do it depends on your personal considerations:

  • Privacy – If you already use ChatGPT or other AI chatbots, you’ve likely shared personal information already. Uploading a profile picture adds only a modest additional privacy risk. If you rarely or never use such services—whether for ethical reasons or personal preference—you may prefer to avoid uploading a photo.
  • Environmental impact – Image generation is one of the more resource‑intensive AI tasks. A single photo won’t make a huge difference, but it’s worth keeping in mind if you’re concerned about AI’s carbon footprint.
  • Quality vs. trade‑offs – The current AI caricatures are fun but may not be high‑quality enough to justify the privacy and environmental considerations for some users.

If you like the look of the caricatures and want to hop on the bandwagon, you now have the steps to create your own.
