Thermal Grizzly first introduced delidded Ryzen 7 9800X3D processors about a year ago, offering the same silicon that AMD ships but with the integrated heat spreader (IHS) removed. The chips are sold with a small markup and come with a two‑year warranty from Thermal Grizzly.

If the Ryzen 7 9800X3D isn’t sufficient, the company now also sells a delidded Ryzen 7 9850X3D for a higher price.

Available Models and Pricing

Thermal Grizzly currently offers four delidded CPU models:

ModelLinkPrice (USD)
AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3DTom’s Hardware review$794.43
AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3DTom’s Hardware review$876.33
AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3DTom’s Hardware review$1,168.83
Intel Core Ultra 9 285KTom’s Hardware review$934.83

Warranty

Because AMD and Intel do not warranty modified CPUs, Thermal Grizzly provides its own coverage:

  • 24‑month warranty from the date of purchase.
  • For the first year, the warranty covers nearly any chip failure that isn’t caused by obvious user damage.
  • The warranty excludes damage from overclocking beyond the manufacturer’s specified values and any use of the original heat spreader.

Compatibility and Usage Notes

  • The chips are marketed as “optimal for TG Direct‑Die cooling solutions.”
  • The Ryzen 9 9950X3D is not compatible with Thermal Grizzly’s Direct‑Die frames.
  • The stock heat spreader must never be used; doing so voids the warranty. Some users repurpose the IHS as a keychain or decorative item.

When installing a direct‑die cooling solution, ensure proper spacing. Both AMD and Intel CPUs normally use thick heat spreaders that create an air gap under stock coolers; removing the IHS eliminates that gap but also increases the risk of chip damage during heatsink installation.
