Tech Corps Initiative

The government agency that sends its corps members abroad to volunteer in foreign countries launched its latest initiative called Tech Corps. The Peace Corps’ proposal will recruit STEM graduates or professionals with experience in the artificial intelligence sector and place them in participating host countries.

Program Overview

Volunteers will be assigned to Peace Corps countries that are part of the American AI Exports Program, created last year by an executive order from President Trump to strengthen the U.S. presence in the global AI market. Tech Corps members will work on AI‑driven solutions for:

  • Agriculture
  • Education
  • Health
  • Economic development

Assignments can be 12‑ to 27‑month in‑person placements or virtual roles.

Volunteer Benefits

Participants will receive:

  • Housing
  • Healthcare
  • A living stipend
  • A volunteer service award (if placed overseas)

Official Statement

“Tech Corps volunteers will be building technical capacity, supporting AI adoption across critical use cases and addressing barriers to last‑mile AI implementation,” said Richard E. Swarttz, the acting director of the Peace Corps, in a press release.

Strategic Implications

While the program is presented as a benefit to host countries, it also aims to secure the United States’ position in the rapidly expanding global AI market, which faces growing competition from China.
