Overview

A film adaptation of Metal Gear Solid is back in development, this time led by filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the directors of Final Destination: Bloodlines (The Hollywood Reporter). The duo are reviving the project at Columbia Pictures under a new first‑look deal with Sony, marking the latest attempt in decades to turn the blockbuster stealth game into a blockbuster film.

“Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that forever revolutionized video games,” Lipovsky and Stein said in a statement. “We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima’s iconic characters and unforgettable world to life.”

Directors’ Background

Lipovsky and Stein earned horror‑genre credibility with Final Destination: Bloodlines, a critical and commercial hit released in 2025. Their upcoming slate includes several IP‑focused genre projects:

  • A sequel to Gremlins for Warner Bros.
  • An animated Venom movie for Sony.

It remains to be seen how the duo will translate Metal Gear Solid’s unique quirks to film.

History of Metal Gear Solid Film Attempts

  • 2006 – Hideo Kojima first revealed that a film adaptation was in development.
  • 2012 – Columbia Pictures announced a new version, with Avi Arad (former head of Marvel Studios) producing.
  • 2014Jordan Vogt‑Roberts, director of Kong: Skull Island, was attached to direct.
  • 2020 – Reports surfaced that Oscar Isaac was cast as Solid Snake.

Avi Arad and his son Ari Arad continue producing the latest iteration, but with Lipovsky and Stein at the helm, earlier versions of the project are likely shelved. Fans still hope to see iconic moments—like a man hiding in a cardboard box—brought to the big screen.
