Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais
Close watchers of the Supreme Court knew that the conservative supermajority was about to dismantle what remained of the Voting Rights Act. Wednesday’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais struck down Section 2 of the law, clearing the way for racist gerrymandering by declaring that it is now “racist to remedy racism.” The ruling is an affront to the history of the Voting Rights Act, to the history of the United States, and to mathematics.
Impact on Louisiana’s congressional districts
Louisiana’s population is roughly 30 % Black, and the state is divided into six congressional districts. The districts are drawn so that there are two majority‑Black districts—two out of six, or about 33 %—which aligns with the proportion of Black residents in the state.
