Announcement
Warhorse Studios, the developer behind the Kingdom Come: Deliverance series, announced an untitled “open world Middle‑earth RPG” on its official X page. The studio also confirmed that development has begun on another Kingdom Come title. No further details have been released yet, but the studio promised additional information at a later date.
Background
The rumor mill has long hinted at a Warhorse‑developed Lord of the Rings game. With Kingdom Come: Deliverance and its 2025 sequel demonstrating the studio’s expertise in story‑driven, open‑world RPGs, a Middle‑earth setting is a natural extension. The shift from medieval Bohemia to Tolkien’s world could involve classic fantasy elements such as orcs and dragons.
Potential Gameplay
It remains unclear whether Warhorse will retain the first‑person perspective of its recent titles or adopt a third‑person, Witcher 3‑style approach. The Kingdom Come games are known for realistic and challenging gameplay, so a Tolkien‑themed counterpart might let players experience the world as a hapless hobbit or a rookie soldier.
Corporate Context
Warhorse Studios is owned by Embracer Group, which recently announced plans to spin off its multi‑studio Fellowship Entertainment division as a publicly listed company. Fellowship Entertainment will continue to develop Tolkien‑related IP acquired in 2022, alongside other franchises such as Tomb Raider and Dead Island, as well as future Kingdom Come projects.
Other Tolkien Projects
While Amazon recently canceled its Lord of the Rings MMO, it still holds a deal with Embracer to create games using the IP. Amazon Gaming chief Jeff Gratis told Eurogamer that the company “continues to explore a compelling new game experience that does justice to Tolkien’s world.”
