Background

Leading up to the release of last year’s Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector (link), creator Gareth Damian Martin said they were done creating new Citizen Sleeper video games (PC Gamer article). Instead, Martin promised to continue the series on the tabletop—a fitting plan, given that much of the inspiration for Citizen Sleeper and Citizen Sleeper 2 came from TTRPGs like Blades in the Dark.

Spindlejack

True to that promise, the team released Spindlejack, a free solo game set on one of the stations players could visit in CS2 (download). It arrived a few months after the announcement and gave fans a taste of the tabletop side of the universe.

Helion Rising

Today Martin announced an entirely new tabletop game called Citizen Sleeper: Helion Rising (announcement).

“Helion Rising is a TTRPG about surviving in the ruins of interplanetary capitalism, resisting corporate power, and building a future, cycle by cycle, together,” Martin writes. “You play as a member of a crew, along with your friends, as you try to make ends meet in a solar system built from the remains of a corporate collapse. You’ll take on challenging contracts, navigate a path between hostile and friendly factions, and live a life among the stars, full of meaningful struggles, small victories, and moments of human connection.”

In short, Helion Rising aims to let players share the world of Citizen Sleeper with friends. If you haven’t played the video games yet, they’re highly recommended for their compelling stories about community and connection in seemingly hopeless situations. Both the games and the new tabletop title are currently discounted—the deepest discounts ever—on Steam and other storefronts.

Future Projects

Martin has promised to share more information about Helion Rising later this year and is teasing additional Citizen Sleeper spinoffs, though details remain under wraps.

Finally, Martin announced that on June 7 they will showcase a new video game they have been developing since the release of CS2. Described as “a totally new project in a new world that I have been working on for years,” the reveal promises to expand the universe even further.
