Overview

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that the 2026 Tesla Model Y is the first vehicle to meet the agency’s new benchmark for advanced driver‑assistance systems (ADAS).

New Benchmark Tests

Four pass‑fail tests have been added to NHTSA’s safety‑ratings program:

  1. Automatic emergency braking for pedestrians
  2. Blind‑spot warning
  3. Blind‑spot intervention
  4. Lane‑assist (helps keep the vehicle in its lane)

These criteria are intended to keep pace with rapidly evolving vehicle technologies and the growing list of consumer‑facing ADAS features, which are often marketed under brand‑specific names that do not clearly describe their functions.

Applicability

The benchmark applies to 2026 Tesla Model Y vehicles assembled on or after November 12, 2025.

NCAP Context

The tests are part of NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), which also conducts the government’s 5‑Star safety‑rating program, including frontal and side‑crash tests, rollover resistance, and crash‑avoidance evaluations.

The four ADAS criteria were added in 2024 as part of an update to NCAP to incorporate advanced driver‑assistance features.

Future Updates

TechCrunch has reached out to NHTSA for information on other vehicles that may be next in line for the new benchmark. The article will be updated if the agency provides a response.
